The competencies required for translation are determined. Examples of the most typical mistakes that can be made by professional interpreters are given. The process of translation practice is considered. The article states that extralinguistic factors together with professional linguistic knowledge and skills are needed as well. The extralinguistic factors could be as follows: the socio-cognitive sphere (culture, value system and worldview), the individual style of an interpreter, imagination, emotional perception of lexical material. The culturological aspect of translation activity is discussed. The importance of taking into account the difference of cultures when translating is also noted. In conclusion it is advised to take into account both linguistic and extralinguistic factors when translating from one language to another. And if the cultures of linguistic materials are absolutely different, for example: European and African ones, extralinguistic factors are preferable.
